The Runoff saga through junk email

Home | Alternative History | Links | Shows | Pictures | Who we am

As you have already seen from our phenomenal web design, Chester River Runoff are more than a band, they are a cyberspace phenom.  This is their story as told through "the Flow", the Runoff's primary means of harrasing their fanbase in the comfort of their own homes.

To recieve such email, send a message to chesterriverrunoff@yahoo.com.  And, as always, to cry "Uncle!" to these semioccassional harangues, reply to sender with a message that reads: "stop sending me this tripe!"  Please include the email addresses of some friends who we should harass instead.

The first email, sent to the mailing list of Sam and Ian’s former band, Seismic Sanchez, sometime in December 2004:

Subject: phlight of the feenix THIS WEAK: bluegrass

According to the law of conservation of energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it only changes form.   Seize your opportunity to see some of the new energy rising from the ashes of Seismic Sanchez when Sam and Ian play this thursday, December 9 at O'Connors Irish Pub in Chestertown (by the Sunoco on High street 7- or 8- whatever is the address).
We've teamed up with Tim from Astralyte and notable local yokel Ben to form a bluegrass band that'll knock you right out of your tube socks.
The show starts at 10 or so, and there might be a cover of a buck or two.
ALSO : This show ONLY, you will get the special priveledge of voting on a name for this new group, so bring a #2/HB pencil and your thinking cap.  Email back at this address with  nominal nominations by tuesday night for the chance to see your idea on the ballot.

sam

let me know if you would like to be put on the mailing list for the new group or taken of the list for the old one

Subject: happy festivus from the band : election results

Thanks to everyone who came out and voted at O'Conners last week.  Its time for the unveiling of the new name.  we are (if you hadn't guessed) officially the.....................Chester River Runoff.
We were only able to locate 21 ballots after the gig, with the breakdownbeing something like this:
Crumpton Banditos            6
Chester River Runoff          5
Lonesome Machete Family 4
New Minority                     1

But as we have a great interest in the continuing subversion of grassroots democracy, we voted ourselves.  Its the Runoff, folks.  Some favorite suggestions were "Shaved donkeys in the sun", "flatland pickers" (sorry guys, we're going to write a song for you instead), and "hop down skppers" (what?).
We're right now working on getting a demo CD together, recorded live in Ben's living room.  Contact us for a press kit and give it to your influential friends.

UPCOMING SHOWS:
Prince Theater February 11, opening for Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition
O'Conners - sometime in january.  probably the first thursday after the college kids return from break

Subject: The Flow: Chester River Runoff update

What's that peculiar odor?
Chester River Runoff?  Or some of the approximately 150 people jammed into O'Conner's Pub last Thursday?
We had a blast, a million thank yous to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves.  You may not believe it, or want to accept it, but you have two chances to see your favorite band in the whole wide world in the coming month, of which we will be reminding you over and over.  Please continue to leave your rotten fruit at home.
THIS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 5:   (OMIGODITMUSTBESOIMPORTANTIFITSINCAPS)
Radcliffe Mill
8pm (we play 1st, so come on out on time)
$3 (all the money goes to breast cancer - fighting, not assisting it)
It's the old wooden mill across from the grain elevator at the end of high street (850 high street) as you drive towards Rock Hall or the Detention Center (we know anyone who drinks enough to enjoy our music must be familiar with THAT place).  This is a really incredible listening space,  a great sounding room, and there has been a really interesting and diverse series of shows happening there since the springtime.
The show starts at 8pm sharp, and we play first, so get there early.
We'll be followed by Steel Point Archery Club and the band that has no name (Rob, KJ, Owen, and Timmy).  It will probably end early enough for everyone to hit the bars or do whatever usually happens on saturday night, so come out and stay for the whole thing.  Sam might just wear his invisible pants instead of only singing about them.

and then, February 11th at 7pm we'll be opening for Annapolis Bluegrass
Coalition at the Prince Theatre.  you'll hear more later and then, March 12, we're playing at the hillside bar in Centreville.  no details available.

peace,

Subject: Prince Theatre; dog attends concert

That's right , a dog is our biggest fan, read it in this weeks Kent News.
There's a preview of this Friday's show at the Prince Theatre and an article about the band complete with that one promo picture that seems to creep up everywhere.  Enjoy.

FRIDAY:
Prince Theatre
7 PM sharp
$10
We're opening for Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition at the nicest venue in the area, so come on out and hear us on a decent sound system.  While we haven't heard ABC, we figure from their picture that they have a pretty good idea of how to play bluegrass music.  It should be a good show.

Subject: The Flow: Hillside, Radio Appearances, Fun

Greetings, long  neglected mailing list!
Garrison Samuel here with all the news from lake Crumpton.

First of all, this Saturday March 12, we are playing at Hillside bar and restaurant in Centerville.  This is the red building on the south end of town, right on MD 213 south of the split.
There's no cover, so come on out and support the scene - its a night show, but I don't know what time.  The inimitable Ben Pitre from Galena is filling in for Ian on bass, making us a majority-bearded band; this may be your only chance to see us in our most grizzled state yet.
Also, this thursday we will be appearing on Bill Wright's Roadtrippin' radio show on 90.5 WKHS, listen from 8-10 to hear us take our sophisticated wits on the airwaves.

NEWS:
We're finally getting together a press kit, so if you know a place that you think Chester River Runoff should play, send us the information and we'll see what we can do.

We're happy to announce that our free-spirited band members have returned from their sojourns across the USA and are amped to start bringing y'all the finest in whatever the heck kind of noise we're making.  There is no show this Sunday at the Mainstay in Rock Hall, it has been postponed until this summer.
Keep an eye out, we have plenty of shows coming up and will be sure to let everyone know as soon as we sort out all the back paperwork.

Subject: EXTRA, EXTRA : Earth Day at Washington College this Saturday

This just in:
Chester River Runoff have been added to the lineup for Washington College's Earth Day celebration this Saturday April 23rd in Chestertown, MD.  Details are still sketchy at this moment regarding times and other acts.  What we do know is that it runs from 12-4 in Kent Circle on the college campus (in the student center if it rains), and we're not playing first.  Admission is free, so come on out and enjoy yourselves.  There will be environmentally-themed booths and vendors, plus tie dye and food.
This Saturday, Washington College.  Be there.
We'll send out another email when we get the details nailed down.

Directions to Kent Circle: From 213 N in Chestertown, turn left at the light into the main campus entrance.  Park wherever you can (or better yet, ride a bike or walk in the spirit of the occasion).  Kent Circle is the first left once you're on the college campus.  The student center (rain location) is in the basement of the only building on  Kent Circle that isn't a dormitory (the cafeteria).

Thanks to everybody who came out to O'Conners last night, we had a great time, and felt like it was our strongest show yet.  We look forward to getting better and better for you, and to a whole slew of new tunes coming up soon.  We neglected to put out our email signup, so if you know anyone who was there who would like to hear from us, have them drop us a line.

Photographers: There must be some folks out there with pictures of the runoff lingering on their hard drives, or sitting in drawers.  If you have any good pics from any of our gigs, feel free to email them to us, or tell us about them so I can go scan them.  We'd love to see them, and would like to put them on the website when we get it going.  thanks.

peace.  enjoy some earth this day

Subject: the Flow: holy crap, it finally happened – website time

That's right folks, your favorite band in the whole wide world finally got a website.  We don't know a damn thing about designing a website, but sam got on the Tripod and put something together as well as he could figure it out.
We want You out there in cyberface to email us, or loan us copies of, any pictures you have of the band, performing, hanging out, whatever.  It's a community effort, brah.  Someday we'll even have chesterriverrunoff.com up and running.  maybe.  for now you'll have to content yourselves with:

http://chesterriverrunoff.tripod.com

Shows: nothing to report, soon at least.  Look for us at O'Conners soon in May, Andy's later, and elsewhere on the eastern shore ASAP.  Talk us up at your favorite spots in baltimore, DC, newark, and even Crumpton.  We hope we'll see you there.

Subject: non band crass solicitation

Ok you guys out there in runoff-land, this has nothing to do with Chester River Runoff.  Be warned, but read anyway.  It could save your life.  SIKE!
My housemate Rob Zouck has a band of his own, called "Hot Rock and the Heat Strokes", who are currently involved in a battle of the bands debacle on the internet.  You would be doing them a great favor by going to the following link and voting for "Hot Rock & the Heat Strokes" as your favorite band.  It's part of some state effort to brainwash the kids into not smoking (we need to keep 'em healthy at least long enough to send them to Iraq, apparently), but the winner gets studio time and some big (indecent?) exposure gig.  So help them out, he says if I can't scrounge some support he'll never take out the trash again (it's totally his turn - you reading this, Rob?).  Tell your friends to do the same, too.

Subject: the Flow: abnormal psychology, free show!

Well, your favorite band in the whole wide world had quite an introduction to the world "across the pond", as they say, when we played our first gig west of the Chesapeake Friday night in Washington, DC.  After a handful of songs on the rooftop of a building in Dupont Circle, a well dressed, middle-aged woman walked in the middle of the band setup, began screaming incoherently about how "YOU CAN'T DO THIS" and "I CAN'T SLEEP IN THE DAYTIME", and then attempted to knock our PA Speaker over the side of the roof to the sidewalk 10 stories below.  She then produced a can of pepper spray and started spraying people at random, took the elevator downstairs, and sprayed some more random folks.  It was quite exciting.  It's up to you, the fan, to make every gig this memorable.
You can start:

This SUNDAY
when we take on The Mainstay in Rock Hall, MD.  The show starts at 4pm and is free admission, all ages.
You should be there.  From 20 west, turn left at the flashing light in Rock Hall, and the venue is on your left hand side.

Subject: the Flow: busy Saturday

Many thanks to those of you who came out to the Mainstay on Sunday, in some ways it was our best show yet.
Your favorite band in the whole wide world has two shows to announce for the weekend, both on Saturday.
The first is at Radcliffe Mill at the end of high street heading out to rock hall.  We will be kicking off an all day/all night festival at 3:30. We will be followed by Lou Thomas, Necron, Mountain Beast, New Age Hillbilly, Eyeball Skeleton, Candy Craig, And I Proceed Backwards, Micah Blue Smalldone, and Plans Plans.
This is the last show ever at the wonderful live music co-op we have all enjoyed for the last year.  The building is going to be renovated and turned into a restaurant and offices, as if Chestertown needs more of those.  If you've never been to a show there, you should come out.  It's a really beautiful thing and its passing will leave a big hole that will be hard to fill.  The show is free.

That night, if you're in the mood for boozing on the waterfront, we'll be playing at P.E. Pruitts in Rock Hall from 8-12.  There is no cover for this, and we hope to unveil some new material for you.  So if you need a break from the Mill, or feel like keeping the bluegrass thing going all night, come out and see us there.

Subject: ANDY’S this Saturday

That's right, Runheads, we're bringing it all back home this weekend.
Since we first started playing out these few months ago, people have asked us over and over: "Why don't you guys play at Andy's?"  We always had an excuse ready, involving family feuds, defacement of property, industrial sabotage, bestiality, or something of that ilk.
Good news on that front (the front of our fictional escapades that is) - Andy's and Chester River Runoff have buried the hatchet, and we're playing there this Saturday, June 11th.  So drop everything and come to the show.
Tell everyone you know that it's the place to be Saturday night, and the power of positive thinking will make it happen.  Or something like that.

SATURDAY

For the the first Saturday night of the Summer, that is.  For those of you who didn't delete this after reading the title ("Increase your Girth 50%" didn't lead into an opening sentence very well), you should know that The Runoff is playing at O'Conners Irish Pub on High Street, outside.  I know I'll be there, you should be, too.  Let that paint dry unsupervised for once and step outside on a sultry summer evening.

Subject: Hootenany at the Mainstay

That's right, big picking party this weekend at the Mainstay before the fireworks.  Details are sketchy, but as I understand it, all of you folks out there who play fiddles, banjos, zithers, mandolins, sousaphones, etc, should come out and do some picking Sunday July 3 behind the mainstay.
the festivities start at noon, and run until whenever.  We will be playing a set on the deck at 2pm, and will probably be much more awe inspiring than the ensuing fireworks.
it's all FREE

We'll then be going into semi-hiding for a while to write some new material, learn a slew of new traditionals, and sharpen up our sound until we reemerge sometime in August sounding like the Dixie Chicks just hit a canister of helium.
We also need the time off to hoe some rows.  If anybody out there wants to pay top dollar for thousands of organic pumpkins, give a shout any time of day or night.

sam

and, as always:
http://chesterriverrunoff.tripod.com     ignore the ads.
be angry with the tripod people for putting in "waterfront luxury condo on the eastern shore" ads on our website.  convert that anger into donations to the Chester River Association.

Subject: the Flow: Attention campers

We've returned from our summer distractions.  The pumpkins are molding in the barn, vacations are finished, the weather is cool enough to permit lucid thought, and the Runoff are flowing once again towards the river of blue grass.  We had a triumphant return to perfoming last weekend at Bill Wright's Roadtrippin' Ranch party, where we kept everybody dancing and jammed out into heretofore untouched realms.
Well, this weekend we're going to try and do it again.  We'll be in Rock Hall all day Saturday and we want you to come out to see the mayhem.  MAYHEM.  It's the Rock Hall fallfest, live music, trinkets to buy, 10 ounce Budweisers flowing like cans down an inclined plane.  We have an acoustic set scheduled behind the Mainstay in the neighborhood of 1 o'clock, and we'll be playing on the Main Stage at Rt. 20 and Main Street from 3:45-4:45.  Then we pack it in and head over to P.E. Pruitt's, where we'll play from 8 to midnight.  Holy cow, what a long day.  YOU WILL come to at least part of it.  We've got a couple new originals, some new songs by other people, and a fresh new attitude geared to today's youth.

Rock City is calling you.

hasta saturday.

Subject: don’t believe the hype!

Word on the streets is that we're being advertised as playing an opening slot at the Prince Theater in Chestertown this Saturday.  Well folks, that couldn't be farther from the truth, so tell every single person you see on the street: "Chester River Runoff are not playing at the Prince Theatre on Saturday.  They are playing a marathon in Rock Hall."    Answer quizzical looks with the novelty squirting flower on your lapel.

Subject: the Flow: is no news really good news?

Chester River Runoff couldn't tell you, because I always have something asinine to say.  So, for the first time in way too long, the webpage has been tweaked.  Nothing drastic, just a few new pictures, and, available online for the first time since I frantically typed it out on my manual typewriter in a late night-frenzy, the official band bio accompanied by booking information.

http://chesterriverrunoff.tripod.com

there is no www.  well, there is, but not in our web address.  you won't find it if you put one in the location bar.  please ignore the ads, we will have an ad free chesterriverrunoff.com online eventually, once we overcome our abject computer ignorance.

We've been doing a lot of private gigs lately, and have been less than diligent in booking new shows for fall.  Have no fear, though, I have a secret plan to get the US out of Vietnam.  I am not a crook.
Anyhow, yes, we will play again, and you will hear about it(at the last minute).

Chestertonians - come by and buy, saturday morning at the farmers market.
Organic pumpkins for sale, planted by the band, tended by hand.  Cost is whatever I can squeeze out of you.
See you soon.

Subject: the Flow: O’Conner’s benefit show this Thursday

Thats right, the Runoff are back in our old stomping grounds at O'Conner's Irish Pub this Thursday night, November 17th.  We've all had celebrity makeovers on the Oprah Winfrey Show, so come see our latest facial hair stylings.  You can come dance if you like, or you can wear OSHA approved ear protection and turn your back (actually, this would be a great trend to start for all our gigs - protective apparrel - I know somebody on this list has to own a welder's helmet - sport it with pride!).  We don't care, we just want your money, as all proceeds benefit our
NEWEST BAND MEMBER
a 1987 Chevy 20 Conversion Van named (no name yet, sorry - maybe we'll have a vote on this just like we did for the band itself).
The unnamed van plays a mean fiddle and dobro, and aspires to help us fulfill our dreams of playing outside of Kent County for the 5th time, and maybe more!  She's got captains chairs, a toilet, a television, and all the amenities you'd expect from a big fat roadtrip machine designed for retirees - but she needs a little TLC and money to get tagged, inspected, insured, and on the road.  This is where you, the victims of our occasional electronic
hassling, come in.  Spread the word!  We'll see you there.

big wet kisses,
sam
